It can be very, very difficult to let them go. So many of us want to keep at least something physical of them nearby.
As we also do warm glass fusing (glass cast in a kiln, vs with a furnace), we'd like to offer the opportunity to give you something that will make you smile to look at. Or something you can hold close to you.
We aren't going to charge an exorbitant amount for a cast glass object, or other glass art meant to be mostly 2D, just because it has ashes included. It does take an extra round in the kiln, but after that it just means a bit of extra care in creation. For instance, we can do a simple heart, as above, with or without a hole for threading a necklace through it, for $20, and less if you wish for multiple ones made at the same time.
FYI, glass kilncasting is not a precise art form, so if you are looking for something that has very clean lines and a lot of detail, this isn't the art form you want. If you want something like a paperweight or other 3D object, look for someone with a glass furnace, or consider resin. We *can* fuse a decal that includes a name or message to the top, though it would need to be special ordered from a company that specifically makes fusing decals from enamel.
In any case, if we can help, please let us know. We've been there.
FAQ
Q: How long does this take?
A: Depending on the desired design and the work lined up for the kiln, it may take as little as 2 days.
Q: Does it have to be cremated ashes? What about something like fur?
A: Because of the high temperature for fusing glass, anything that is easy to burn will be burnt. We can still include it, but you wouldn't really notice by looking at it, whereas you would notice ashes. We could try a tooth or nail, but that might take extra kiln time to remove 100% of the material that might decompose and later break the glass. Any sort of moisture must be removed.
Q: What are my options?
A: Quite a few! We have a wide variety of fusible glass colors, both translucent and opaque. We have a variety of cast molds, and we can make simple shapes without casting. If you want a more complicated shape, there are companies who use a water jet to cut glass just about whatever shape you want that we can use for a base. We can include mica flakes for sparkle, or even copper foil (which usually fires pink-red).
It will just be something simple, as we've only been working with glass for two or so years. There are companies on Etsy and elsewhere that can make some beautiful objets d’art. They just charge more for their time and greater experience. But if simple is just fine, then think about what color(s) and shape you might like, and let us know.
